I have been playing with my new iPhone almost constantly since I got it last week. It’s the best phone system I have had, I already have over 7 pages of apps, although I will be going through those as soon as I get a moment or two and culling them down to something less than three or so pages. At least I hope to do that, might find that I like all the ones I have picked up so far. Although I am betting that there are a few that I am going to get rid of, just from briefly looking at them. I am currently spending time looking for a good to do list application. I have downloaded several but they weren’t that good to be honest. They were either too much trouble to use or just plain troublesome and not worth even turning them on. I am keeping an eye on the store, though. And yes, I am being somewhat cheap and trying all the free ones first. It only makes sense, especially with not being able to get a refund if you buy something that you don’t like. If I would have had to pay for all the free ones that I have already deleted I would be not only apologizing to my wallet I would be quite pissed.

The apps are really icing on the cake for the iPhone. There are so many to choose from that you can find almost whatever you want, though it’s faster to download them on your broadband at home or at the local coffee shop. I have also found the texting to be a whole lot easier and faster on the phone than on my previous one. Now that they can do landscape mode with the texting it certainly makes a difference. I used texting on my friends before I got my own and at that time it was still a bit of a pain to type, but it was much easier than the phone I had at the time. So now it is even better, I can be so much more annoying to my friends, even without a Bluetooth headset.

I kind of got lost for a while in the app store. Lots of fun looking stuff! Great free stuff! Which is very nice, my wallet really likes that! There are also, of course, a lot of apps that require payment but some of them really seem to be worth it. I already picked up a couple, mainly because they were currently like eighty percent off, figured if I was interested in them, now would be the time to get the app instead of waiting until it goes back to full price. I saw a few others that I want, but need to check into before getting as they are a bit more expensive. Ok, going to go try and finish stuff so I can go play just a bit.

WhooYa! Finally, my own iPhone! I waited for what seemed a long time but needed to get a business line, which is different news, and I went ahead and upgraded my phone. The old phone was really at the point of falling apart. I had about three buttons on it that were cracked completely through the button and it was having some issues dealing with some of the stuff I was trying to do. Texting was a serious pain, though I did a lot of it. However, texting on my new iPhone is a really easy. Quick, fast to type and easy to cut, copy and paste if I want. I am really enjoying it so far and I have only had it for like a day. I am very anxious to play with it for a bit but I have a few things I have to get done so playing with it is having to go on hold until I finish those things, afterwards I can play with it some.

HDTV is a great thing, and I really miss cable! The antenna work and receives HD signals over the air but it really drives me nuts that the signal is so weak. It goes in and out, depending on the channel. What is worse is the one channel I watch daily has real, actually most of the channels, have real problems when the microwave is being used. If I run the microwave then I lose the signal to the TV, it gets weaker and is a big pain to try and watch. I have thought about trying to tune it with a baseball bat but figure I would really regret it later when I couldn’t watch anything. I was thinking maybe I should try and find some sort of technology forums, was thinking I might get some better ideas than the baseball bat fix. I haven’t tried that yet, mainly because, honestly, I just thought of it. Feel kind of stupid as I use the internet most all day and that should have been one of the first things I thought of doing.

It’s just really getting frustrating. I will probably hold off for a bit before getting the cable or satellite. Probably cable as the signal on it is fairly stable. Holding off, cause of course, I want the more expensive options. Yep, the DVR. Have to have that, makes watching TV so much more convenient! Being able to record the shows and watch them later is very nice. You get used to it after a bit, then you get spoiled with it and really miss it when you move. At least I did. Ah, well sooner or later I’ll break down and get it again. Then I can start watching more TV. Right now so much to do I don’t get much chance to watch a lot but if I could record things and watch them when I wanted to, like at lunch, that would definitely fit my schedule!

Talking about cameras again today. I was told that I shouldn’t quit my day job. I apparently don’t know much about cameras, let alone a CCTV system. I was thinking about getting one, although I am probably not going to worry about it, least not right now. If I can’t handle a regular camera I would probably have trouble with a CCTV camera. Although, I do know they are different but the principle is the same, right. They both record images in some way. When I get a house I want a CCTV system for security, but until then I probably should learn how to use a regular camera.

I was recently told that I should not quit my day job to be a photographer. I, sadly, would have to agree. I was taking pictures of a friends ceremony, and all but three or four of the pictures I took are fairly blurry. I guess night mode indoors is not a good choice. I tried different modes but those images didn’t turn out much better. I honestly wasn’t sure what mode to use, and I think that was my biggest problem. I have the point and press button part down. But choosing which mode to point and press button with still confuses me. If I did a lot more photography than I do I would probably take a bit of time to figure out what is what, but currently I just don’t do that much, which is probably why my friend said what she did. She thought it was funny, but I felt kind of bad because the photos turned out so bad. I wanted to get some good ones, which is why I was messing with the modes, but that was a mistake. Luckily I did get a few that were usable , just not very many. Maybe I should take a class.

Talking about music again today, I think. Just been on my mind a bunch. Thinking about what it does for a person. I find that music can be very motivating sometimes and relaxing others. Depending on the music you are listening to, your mood may change with it. I think that is often the purpose of music, to help us feel more alive or in tune. And yes that was a pun. It does kind of lead in from what I was saying yesterday, about how many people seem to get locked into a certain type of music, mainly because it is nostalgic.

Music tends to get associated with things or times in our lives, those times that we are listening to it, and when we hear it again it takes us back. Heck, there are even several songs talking about it. Where the lyrics themselves speak of the music taking you back. Good music, though, can move you without a physical change or a memory attached to it. That is, if you remain open to new things and trying different activities as you get older. It also helps us get things done sometimes. I have several friends, and myself as well, who work faster and are more productive when there is good music playing in the background. It can be turned down low, but a certain background noise really helps things move along for me when I am trying to write or do research or study for school. Actually, the studying for school is when the music is fairly low because having the study background noise helps me focus. At least it seems to; I have noticed that I can get more done if I listen to music. If I don’t I often sit there staring at the screen trying to find a muse, motivation or a kick in the pants to get me doing things. Music can hold us back but it is most useful in moving us forward.

Music is always an interesting topic, it actually leads me on to others that I may talk about later. I am thinking of making this a media week. By media I am referring to music, art, movies, things like that. Anyway, for today we will go with music. I might even carry it over to tomorrow. There are a lot of opinions on music, well on all art, and music is art. Opinions often depend on background, culture and general upbringing. Many people seem to be most interested in music that they remember from childhood and a bit on up. You know, thinking about it I wonder if being stuck always on the same songs and in the same era of music means stagnation? Stagnation in the mind perhaps. I know lots of people who only like the music that was made during a particular year when they were growing up. I was thinking that is because of the memories.

The idea I was trying to connect to after getting into talking about music and people’s likes and dislikes was the thought that many people use music to recall a specific feeling. Perhaps it’s not that simple but it still seems like a good thought. Let me explain a bit. If you get stuck in relieving the songs of your past does that mean you are no longer making new memories? At least not like you did before? Why would a person stop, I wonder. I have heard many people say that the music of today is nothing like it was. I wonder if that is because the music of then reminds them of what they might consider their glory days, or the best times of their lives. If they started living and doing other things, I wonder if they would feel that the music of today is as good as that of times past?

The security, surveillance stuff from yesterday is still on my mind. I was thinking that will all the stuff available you could really have your own personal surveillance society set up at home. You could pick up a CCTV system for home and record everything you do, although I don’t really see the point on that one. I can see it for security purposes, sure, but if you did I know I would want a closed system. Mainly cause if you are connected to anything then you have to deal with people hacking into your cameras and watching you, also the premise of a few movies. I wonder how they deal with that in Britain, is it something they have problems with. Can you imagine, with all the cameras they supposedly have around? I wonder if they are all connected and feeding to a central database or repository. They might even have issues with people watching their cameras and not know it. Then again you have cameras that people are supposed to watch, most of the traffic cameras in the states are accessible to the public so they can take a look at conditions themselves. Then there is also the Google camera stuff, although it is not current. There are a lot of other cameras available though, tourist cameras and summit cameras and cameras like that.

Following that line of thought, how secure are the security companies that provide monitoring and recording services? I assume they probably have to be fairly secure because they could be liable for any problems with their services. It is an interesting thought, I wonder how many actually take that into consideration when picking a security system for their homes. I think that would really be more of a problem than the cameras all over Britain or the ones in the United States. Most of those are in public places so you really wouldn’t be seeing much you couldn’t see by sitting in a roadside café and watching the people go by.

Anybody not used to being watched should probably get used to it, at least to a point. I recently came across an article about the surveillance in the United States and I know that Britain is already general considered a surveillance society. CCTV is big all over, but has been picking up in the states, while as I understand it, in Britain it is a given that anything you do is being recorded. Although, I don’t honestly know if it is truly that bad yet. It certainly seems like it from the news stories and stuff you see. I am not really bothered by it that much. If people want to watch that is fine, it is just the other side of it that is a bit scary. If you can have the surveillance society without the police state I think that would not be a problem for most people. The problem is that when you move into being a surveillance society it seems like the police state tends to follow, whether it is immediately or slowly grown on people so that they accept it as normal. As an example, after a certain point everyone being subject to call recording becomes just something that happens, and not something anyone thinks about.

That all makes a person think about the novels and movies that depict that kind of society. Just due to the way people are you really have to accept a certain degree of danger and instability in your society to have freedom and avoid a police state. The funny thing is that, again, just due to the way people are if you do have a surveillance society and police state you will still have the danger, because no matter how hard a society tries to change it. People are different and therefore will only put up with certain restrictions before they choose to rebel. It comes from the teenage years, I think. Who hasn’t rebelled when they were a kid? It’s like a boiling kettle, too much heat or control and it explodes, but not enough heat or control and things also fall apart.

Anybody else out there using an antenna for their TV? I personally am getting a bit tired of it. In general it works fairly well, but when it is windy or stormy then the signal gets weak and it goes in and out. Really that is not to bad but I am very tired of having to get up (yes, lazy) to change the positioning of the antenna. It really seems that each station needs it in a different direction. It is either each station or each show. Either way it is really a pain in the butt! Usually it’s a pain in my butt, cause I am the lazy fellow that has to get up to change it. It goes against my anti exercise stance. What can you do, though?

Anyway, I am thinking about cable or satellite TV again. I looked into it before, looking for cable and satellite help, but never broke down to do it. Still not sure if I am that desperate yet, but I am getting there. I Have kind of looked at companies like Sky or Direct TV but the biggest problem with paying for cable or satellite is that you get so many useless channels. I was wondering why they somebody doesn’t have a choose your own channels package or something. I think it would be a great hit. I would go for it, especially if it was a bit discounted. I haven’t seen anything like that though. I’ve checked Virgin Media, which looks good, and Comcast for different areas. I don’t need three hundred channels when I will probably only ever watch about fifteen of them regularly, though. That is not to say I want all the channels to go away, cause choice is a very important thing! My fifteen channels or so are probably not the fifteen or so that the next guy would want to watch. So having a ‘do it yourself’ or diy package would be a wonderful thing. I wonder if they don’t currently have the capability to offer something like that. I can see the first one to offer that getting a whole lot of customers almost immediately. They could do like a pay per view thing, where you look at the movies on your tv and then choose the one you want and are charged for it. If they could do the same with a pay per channel thing.

I believe I was complaining about antennas and how good they seem to work. It is not that I am using a cheap antenna because I spent quite a bit on it, it’s actually an HD one and when the signal is good things look great! My irritation kind of seems to go in waves, about like the signal. When it is good and working great then I am fine and a happy camper. There are some channels I miss but it just wasn’t worth paying for a whole package of crap that I just wasn’t going to use. I don’t know much about and am not really interested in those boxes like Eurovox for cable or the Dreambox for satellite because the whole idea doesn’t seem quite fair to me. Although when the signal is bad and causing issues then I kind of reconsider things and all those extra channels and just going ahead and paying for cable or satellite TV instead of just using an antenna starts looking less annoying.

After calming down a bit I think I am about half way there. Halfway to going ahead and breaking down to pay for cable or satellite. I still am not sure which would be best, something like Sky or something like Comcast. They both have their attractions and their pitfalls. I am not honestly sure about what all the pitfalls are and what the full difference between them are but I know what makes me interested in both of them. Cable seems to be a bit more expensive but it looks to be more stable. The satellite seems to have some of the same problems that the antenna does but supposedly to a whole lesser degree. I have heard that during intense storms you don’t get anything or you lose out on some channels. But cable works whether there is a storm or not. The biggest problem with cable would be error on the provider’s part or somebody cutting something they shouldn’t. I think I would have to check more into what the differences are and just how bad satellite is during storms. I would probably go with satellite if the storm thing is not a big issue. I guess the next time I hit that boiling point with my current antenna I have something to do besides grab a crowbar.
