Antenna frustration!

Anybody else out there using an antenna for their TV? I personally am getting a bit tired of it. In general it works fairly well, but when it is windy or stormy then the signal gets weak and it goes in and out. Really that is not to bad but I am very tired of having to get up (yes, lazy) to change the positioning of the antenna. It really seems that each station needs it in a different direction. It is either each station or each show. Either way it is really a pain in the butt! Usually it’s a pain in my butt, cause I am the lazy fellow that has to get up to change it. It goes against my anti exercise stance. What can you do, though?

Anyway, I am thinking about cable or satellite TV again. I looked into it before, looking for cable and satellite help, but never broke down to do it. Still not sure if I am that desperate yet, but I am getting there. I Have kind of looked at companies like Sky or Direct TV but the biggest problem with paying for cable or satellite is that you get so many useless channels. I was wondering why they somebody doesn’t have a choose your own channels package or something. I think it would be a great hit. I would go for it, especially if it was a bit discounted. I haven’t seen anything like that though. I’ve checked Virgin Media, which looks good, and Comcast for different areas. I don’t need three hundred channels when I will probably only ever watch about fifteen of them regularly, though. That is not to say I want all the channels to go away, cause choice is a very important thing! My fifteen channels or so are probably not the fifteen or so that the next guy would want to watch. So having a ‘do it yourself’ or diy package would be a wonderful thing. I wonder if they don’t currently have the capability to offer something like that. I can see the first one to offer that getting a whole lot of customers almost immediately. They could do like a pay per view thing, where you look at the movies on your tv and then choose the one you want and are charged for it. If they could do the same with a pay per channel thing.

More antenna

I believe I was complaining about antennas and how good they seem to work. It is not that I am using a cheap antenna because I spent quite a bit on it, it’s actually an HD one and when the signal is good things look great! My irritation kind of seems to go in waves, about like the signal. When it is good and working great then I am fine and a happy camper. There are some channels I miss but it just wasn’t worth paying for a whole package of crap that I just wasn’t going to use. I don’t know much about and am not really interested in those boxes like Eurovox for cable or the Dreambox for satellite because the whole idea doesn’t seem quite fair to me. Although when the signal is bad and causing issues then I kind of reconsider things and all those extra channels and just going ahead and paying for cable or satellite TV instead of just using an antenna starts looking less annoying.

After calming down a bit I think I am about half way there. Halfway to going ahead and breaking down to pay for cable or satellite. I still am not sure which would be best, something like Sky or something like Comcast. They both have their attractions and their pitfalls. I am not honestly sure about what all the pitfalls are and what the full difference between them are but I know what makes me interested in both of them. Cable seems to be a bit more expensive but it looks to be more stable. The satellite seems to have some of the same problems that the antenna does but supposedly to a whole lesser degree. I have heard that during intense storms you don’t get anything or you lose out on some channels. But cable works whether there is a storm or not. The biggest problem with cable would be error on the provider’s part or somebody cutting something they shouldn’t. I think I would have to check more into what the differences are and just how bad satellite is during storms. I would probably go with satellite if the storm thing is not a big issue. I guess the next time I hit that boiling point with my current antenna I have something to do besides grab a crowbar.

Internet needed.

Talking about the stuff a minute ago made me think of what was important. Having cable ADSL, SDSL or better fiber. That is what a lot of peoples work currently depends on. I know it is something that a lot of people seriously consider when looking for a service provider for home or work. You are have to make doubly sure of things when your work is at your home and your connection is what allows you to conduct business.

It reminds me of what I had to deal with in setting up my home service. After looking at the available options in the area I had chosen one that I thought was the better deal and would save me some money. Well, I waited patiently, more or less, for them to set things up so I could get to work and I finally received a call saying things should be up and I could plug in and go. They had previously sent me the box for a self set up thing. I plugged in and didn’t go. Needless to say I was unhappy about that. I called and was told sorry they didn’t have something finished so it would take longer but by the next morning things would be up and running. I had high hopes. Next morning though there is still no connectivity, so I call again and am on hold for a while and then discussing things back and forth with different people only to find out that they had been mistaken and it was going to take about two weeks to get my service up. I was irate by that point and after more discussion and calls I got it down to a week, but by then I was figuring that if this was the type of service I could look forward to and the type of trouble I would have to deal with if there was ever an actual problem after the service was up then it might be worth paying more for the other service. So I told the service I was dealing with that if they couldn’t have it up in two days I wanted to cancel before I started and I would send their box back. I sent their box back. The good news, though is that the other service had a guy out the afternoon of the morning I called and I was up and running a few minutes after he got there.
